What actually happens when you miss a delivery
You were out when the courier arrived, and now the tracking page reads something like "delivery attempted" or "recipient unavailable". The first reaction is usually panic, but a missed delivery is a routine event with a predictable sequence, and in almost every case the parcel is still on its way to you.
Here is the order of events, what each status actually means, and the deadline you need to watch so the parcel does not get returned to sender.
The normal sequence after a missed attempt
- Attempt one. The courier tries the address, gets no answer, and leaves a card or a note.
- Status update. Tracking shows "attempted delivery", "not home" or a similar message. If the email address on the order is correct, you usually get a notification too.
- The parcel goes to a pickup point. Depending on the carrier this might be a shop, a parcel locker, a post office or the courier's local depot.
- A holding window starts. Typically seven to fourteen days, after which the parcel is sent back.
- Return to sender. If nobody collects it, the parcel travels back to the warehouse.

What the tracking statuses mean
| Status | What it means | What you should do |
|---|---|---|
| Attempted delivery / recipient not home | Courier tried, nobody answered | Wait for the card or check tracking for the pickup point |
| Ready for pickup / at collection point | Parcel is waiting for you | Collect within the holding window, bring ID |
| Held at depot | Waiting at the courier's local hub | Contact the carrier to arrange redelivery or pickup |
| Return to sender | Holding window expired | Contact support to arrange a resend |
| Held at customs / awaiting clearance | Different problem — a customs check | See parcel held at customs |
If any of these are unclear, our guide to tracking your vape order explains how to read the timeline in order.
The deadline that matters most
The one number to remember is the holding window. Once a parcel reaches a pickup point it is only stored for a set period — commonly seven to fourteen days — and then goes back. Missing that window is the most common reason parcels get returned, and it also explains the second most common outcome: the parcel returns to the warehouse and has to be resent, which adds days to the total.
Two things prevent this:
- Collect promptly. Do not wait until the last day — pickup points get busy and opening hours vary.
- Watch the tracking, not just the email. Notifications occasionally land in spam, and in Germany, Czechia and Sweden parcels are sometimes routed to a pickup point without a card.
What to do if you know you will be out
The cleanest solution is to change the destination before the attempt happens:
- Redirect to a neighbour or a pickup point. Many carriers let you do this from the tracking page once a parcel is in transit.
- Use a parcel locker. Locker delivery removes the "nobody home" problem entirely. If your carrier offers it, this is the most reliable option for repeat orders.
- Request a resend if the window has already passed. Contact support with your order number; a returned parcel can usually be dispatched again once it is back at the warehouse.
If you need to change the address on an order that has not shipped yet, see changing the delivery address after ordering.
Age verification on delivery
One thing that does not go away when you miss a delivery is the age check. Because vape products are age-restricted, delivery in Germany requires an adult to receive the parcel, and pickup points will ask for identification. If the person collecting is not the person who ordered, the pickup can be refused — which means the parcel re-enters the holding cycle. Our explanation of the delivery age check in Germany sets out what ID you need.
Frequently asked questions
How many delivery attempts will the courier make?
Usually one, sometimes two, depending on the carrier. After that the parcel is routed to a pickup point rather than attempted again. This is why watching tracking after the first attempt matters.
How long do I have to collect a missed parcel?
Typically seven to fourteen days from the date it reaches the pickup point. The exact window is printed on the card or shown on the tracking page — treat the shorter figure as your deadline to be safe.
What if my parcel is returned to sender?
Contact support with your order number. The parcel comes back to the warehouse and is normally reserved for you; a resend can be arranged, usually with a fresh delivery window.
Can someone else collect the parcel for me?
At many pickup points, yes, if they bring their own ID and the collection notice. Because of the age check on vape products, the collector must be an adult, and some carriers require the named recipient specifically.
Why did I not get a card?
Cards are sometimes not left, particularly in apartment buildings or when the carrier routes straight to a pickup point. Always treat the tracking status as the primary source rather than waiting for a card.
Does a missed delivery cost me anything?
A simple redelivery or pickup usually does not. If the parcel is returned and has to be shipped again, a resend fee may apply depending on the carrier's terms. Check the returns and warranty page for the general conditions.
What if the parcel arrives damaged after all this?
Photograph the packaging and the contents before opening anything further, then contact support. Your rights in that situation are set out in damaged parcel rights.
Missing a delivery is not the same as losing the parcel. The formula is simple: read the tracking, find the pickup point, collect inside the holding window, and bring ID for the age check. Everything else — redelivery, locker drop, resend — is a variation on the same process. Deliveries to Germany, Czechia and Sweden follow this pattern, and typical EU delivery times give you a realistic expectation for how long the whole journey takes.
