Age-Checked Vape Delivery in Germany: ID at the Door

Buying vapes online in Germany is legal and normal. What surprises people is the doorstep: a courier who will not hand the parcel over without seeing photo ID, and who will not leave it with a neighbour. This guide explains why that happens, what the driver is actually checking, what to do when you are out, and how to make a re-delivery work the first time.

Why the carrier checks your age at all

Nicotine products may only be sold to adults. When you buy in a shop, the cashier checks. When you buy online, the age check has to happen somewhere in the chain, and for these products it does not stop at the checkout page.

Two obligations sit behind this. The seller has to have a system that prevents sales to minors, and the carrier has to be able to hand the goods to a person who is lawfully allowed to receive them. That second part is why the driver asks for ID rather than just taking a signature: a signature proves someone accepted a parcel, not that the person was 18 or over. How the same handover checks vary across other EU destinations is mapped in the EU-wide ID checks guide.

German carriers use a visual age check for this category of shipment, in which the driver assesses whether the recipient is clearly of age and only asks for ID when it is not obvious. In practice that means most adults over 25 are handed the parcel without reaching for a wallet, and younger recipients are asked. It is not a judgment about you; it is the carrier discharging a legal duty, and drivers who skip it are the ones who get in trouble with their employer.

What our own delivery terms say

Rather than leaving the outcome to chance, our shipping terms set the expectation directly:

  • Deliveries are made only to the person named on the order, or to an adult at the delivery address who can produce identification.
  • The parcel cannot be left with a neighbour, and it cannot be left in a parcel locker.
  • A parcel refused for lack of age verification comes back to us, and we refund the goods value less the return cost.

That last point matters, and it is worth being blunt about it. An age-checked parcel that goes back is a real cost, and it is avoidable. The rest of this guide is about avoiding it.

What to have ready

Keep it simple: a photo ID with your date of birth on it — national identity card, passport, or a driving licence. Have it near the door on the expected day. The driver does not scan it, does not photograph it and does not record the number; the check is visual. You are not handing over data.

If someone else at the address is receiving the parcel for you, they must be an adult and must have their own ID. Making that arrangement in advance is far better than discovering it at the door with a driver who has forty more stops.

If you are not going to be in

This is the single biggest cause of failed deliveries on this product category, and it is entirely solvable.

  1. Redirect before the first attempt. Most German carriers let you change the delivery option through their app once you have the tracking number — changing the day, or nominating a nearby staffed location where the parcel can be collected. Do this as soon as the tracking link arrives, not after a failed attempt.
  2. Use a staffed pickup location rather than an unattended locker. A parcel shop, a post office counter or a carrier shop has a person behind the desk who can carry out the age check. An automated locker cannot, which is exactly why age-restricted shipments are excluded from them.
  3. Plan for the second attempt. If the first attempt fails, the carrier will usually try once more or move the parcel to a collection point. Track it and collect promptly — collection windows are short, and after that the parcel returns to sender.

Our tracking guide covers how to read the scans and spot the point at which a parcel has switched from "attempted" to "held for collection", and how vape orders are shipped explains the despatch side that happens before the driver sets off.

The age check is not the only thing that can stop a delivery

It is worth knowing the difference, because the fix is different in each case — and if the parcel is sitting at a border rather than at your door, that is a different problem entirely, covered in what to do when a parcel is held at customs.

What the tracking saysWhat is happeningWhat you do

A note on wholesale deliveries

Trade orders are handled differently, and for a good reason. Where the consignee is a business address with a person who can sign for and take responsibility for regulated goods, the check happens at that point rather than at a private doorstep, and large orders may travel as several parcels against one consignment. If you run a shop and want the delivery arrangements set out before you order, the trade desk will confirm them, and the wholesale guide covers the rest of the trade process. Age-verification obligations on onward sale stay with the seller of record, which is why blind dropshipping to end consumers is not something we offer.

Why this is stricter than it used to be

The direction of travel across the EU is towards tighter youth-access controls, not looser ones. Germany has extended smoke-free rules to cover vaping products, and several member states have gone further and restricted which shops may sell them at all. None of that changes the doorstep for an adult buying lawfully — but it does mean carriers have less discretion than they once did. Our age verification guide covers the online side of the same obligation: what the seller has to check before the parcel is even despatched.

Frequently asked questions

Does the courier really need to see my ID?

For age-restricted goods, yes — where the recipient does not clearly look over the relevant age. The check is visual and nothing is recorded from the document.

Can a neighbour take my vape parcel?

Not under our delivery terms, and in practice not for age-checked shipments, because the neighbour would also have to pass the age check and there is no way for the driver to establish that reliably. Nominate a staffed pickup point instead.

Can it go to a parcel locker?

No. An unattended locker cannot perform an age check, so these shipments are excluded from locker delivery. Choose a staffed location if you will not be at home.

What happens if I miss the delivery twice?

The parcel returns to us, and we refund the goods value less the cost of the return. Redirecting the delivery through the carrier app as soon as you have the tracking number avoids this entirely.

Is the age check the same for a business order?

No. Trade shipments go to a business address where the receiving party takes responsibility for the goods, and the arrangements are confirmed with the trade desk before despatch.

Can I order for someone else as a gift?

The recipient must be 18 or over and must be able to pass the age check on delivery. If they cannot, the parcel comes back.

For adults aged 18 and over. Nicotine is a highly addictive substance. This article is general information about delivery practice in Germany, not legal advice.
