Cost Per Puff: Which Vape Size Is Actually Best Value?

Why the biggest number is rarely the best value

Vape pricing has a predictable shape. Small devices cost almost nothing and deliver terrible value per puff. Mid-size devices improve sharply. Past a certain capacity, value stops improving and starts flattening - you pay more per device for roughly the same cost per puff, sometimes worse.

Finding that turning point is what cost-per-puff analysis is for. The maths is simple, but it only works if you use a realistic puff count rather than the number on the box.

The realistic puff count rule

Advertised puff counts assume a draw of roughly one second, which almost nobody uses. Real-world testing consistently puts actual output at 70-85% of the advertised figure. A 10,000-puff device delivers closer to 7,000-9,000. A 60,000-puff device lands near 50,000-58,000.

There is nothing dishonest about the gap - it is a standard specification measured under standard conditions, and the same applies to fuel economy figures on cars. But it means every value calculation should start by discounting the box number by roughly 25%. Our realistic puff count breakdown covers how draw length, airflow and temperature move the figure.

Cost per puff across the size tiers

Using current German retail prices and the 75% realism factor, the pattern looks like this:

Device tierTypical priceRealistic puffsCost per puff
10,000 puffsEUR 13-187,500-8,500EUR 0.0016-0.0022
20,000-30,000 puffsEUR 18-2515,000-22,000EUR 0.0010-0.0014
40,000-60,000 puffsEUR 25-3530,000-45,000EUR 0.0005-0.0008
Multi-channel systemsEUR 35-60Depends on channelsEUR 0.0005-0.0009

The jump from the 10,000-puff tier to the 40,000-plus tier is a three-to-four-fold improvement in cost per puff. That is not a rounding error - it is the difference between roughly EUR 0.002 and EUR 0.0006 for every puff you take.

How that compares with cigarettes

A pack of twenty cigarettes contains roughly 240 puffs, and a pack in Germany costs around EUR 8-10 depending on brand. That works out to EUR 0.04-0.05 per puff.

Put the two side by side:

  • Cigarettes: approximately EUR 0.04-0.05 per puff
  • 10,000-puff vape: approximately EUR 0.0016-0.0022 per puff
  • 40,000-puff-plus vape: approximately EUR 0.0005-0.0008 per puff

At the big-puff end that is roughly 60-90 times cheaper per puff than smoking. Even at the small-device end it is 20-30 times cheaper. As a raw comparison, a single 35,000-puff device holds about as many puffs as 146 packs of cigarettes.

That framing is deliberately mechanical, and it leaves out the health argument entirely - which is where the real case for switching rests, not in the cost column. Our cost comparison for Germany and the first week of switching guide cover both sides.

Where the value curve flattens

Bigger is not unlimitedly better, and three costs rise with capacity.

Up-front risk. A EUR 45 device that you dislike is a EUR 45 mistake. A EUR 15 device that you dislike is a lesson. If you are unsure about a brand or flavour, buy small first - the entire beginner's guide is built around that principle.

Flavour fatigue. A single-flavour 50,000-puff device means one taste for a month. Most people underestimate how fast that becomes a problem, which is why multi-flavour devices exist and why the modular WASPE Quinton 500K approach solves a real complaint rather than an imagined one.

Degradation over time. Flavour quality drops before the liquid runs out on any device, and the longer a device sits partly used, the more noticeable it becomes. Our burnt taste guide explains when that is the coil and when it is simply age.

The practical rule: buy the largest device you will realistically finish in three to four weeks, not the largest one available.

Matching capacity to how you actually vape

Cost per puff only matters once you know your consumption.

  • Under 200 puffs a day (light or social use) - a 10,000-puff device already lasts six weeks. The value improvement from going bigger is real on paper but you will likely lose flavour quality before you finish it, so a smaller device plus variety beats one enormous one.
  • 200-500 puffs a day (moderate) - the 20,000 to 30,000 tier is the sweet spot. Long enough to be economical, short enough that flavour stays fresh, and light enough to carry.
  • Over 500 puffs a day (heavy) - the 40,000-plus tier genuinely pays off, and this is where cost per puff becomes the deciding factor. Our big-puff explainer covers what to look for at this end of the market.

If you are working down your nicotine strength at the same time, run that as a separate decision - our step-down plan explains why changing strength and format simultaneously makes both harder to judge. And if 0 mg/ml is the goal, the 0-nicotine guide covers what changes besides the cost.

Frequently asked questions

Which vape size gives the best value?

On cost per puff, the 40,000-puff-plus tier is the best value at roughly EUR 0.0005-0.0008 per puff. But if you will not finish a device that size before flavour quality drops, a 20,000-30,000 model is the better real-world choice.

Do the advertised puff counts include a discount?

No. Advertised counts assume a roughly one-second draw. Real-world output typically runs at 70-85% of the advertised figure depending on how you vape.

How much cheaper is vaping than smoking?

At the big-puff end, roughly 60-90 times cheaper per puff. A 40,000-puff device costs around EUR 0.0007 per puff against EUR 0.04-0.05 for a cigarette.

Is a bigger device always better value?

No. Past the mid tier the cost-per-puff improvement flattens while up-front risk, flavour fatigue and age-related flavour loss all increase. Buy the largest device you will realistically finish in three to four weeks.

How many cigarettes is a 35,000-puff vape equivalent to?

About 146 packs. A pack of twenty contains roughly 240 puffs, so 35,000 puffs is around 145-146 packs by puff count alone.
