Nicotine Strength: Pod Systems vs Disposable Vapes

Why 20 mg/ml feels different on a pod system and a disposable

Two devices labelled 2% nicotine — 20 mg per millilitre — can deliver noticeably different amounts of nicotine per puff. The label describes the liquid, not the experience. What changes between a disposable and a refillable pod system is how much liquid each puff vaporises, and that is governed by power, coil resistance and airflow.

The strength number is still the right place to start. It is just not the whole answer.

What the number on the label actually means

Nicotine strength describes concentration in the liquid: 20 mg/ml is 20 milligrams of nicotine in every millilitre of e-liquid. That is the EU ceiling under the TPD, which is why our catalogue offers 0% and 2% rather than higher options. The arithmetic between percentage and mg/ml is set out in our conversion guide.

Concentration is only half of the dose. Dose also depends on how much liquid you turn into aerosol, and that is where the device matters.

How the device changes the dose

FactorDisposableRefillable pod system
Typical powerFixed, low (often 7–12 W)Often adjustable, sometimes higher
Coil resistanceHigh, fixedReplaceable, varies by pod
AirflowFixed, usually tightOften adjustable
Liquid per puffSmall, consistentCan be larger if power is raised
Typical sessionShort, frequentLonger draws more common

A refillable pod run at higher power turns more liquid into vapour per puff, so the same 20 mg/ml delivers more nicotine each time you inhale. A disposable's fixed low output is why a 2% disposable can feel gentler than a 2% liquid in a pod. The physical difference between the two formats is covered in pod systems vs disposables.

Matching a strength to a device

As a working rule, the tighter and lower-powered the device, the higher the concentration that feels right. Concentrations above the EU ceiling are not available, so the practical adjustment on a higher-output device is to take shorter draws rather than to look for a stronger liquid.

Device typeDraw styleUsual starting strength
Disposable bar (fixed, low power)Mouth-to-lung, tight2% / 20 mg/ml
Refillable pod, low powerMouth-to-lung, tight2% / 20 mg/ml
Refillable pod, adjustable powerMixed2% / 20 mg/ml, with shorter draws
Reducing intakeAnyStep down gradually — see the step-down guide

For context on how a strength compares with what you used to smoke, our cigarettes-per-day guide is the better starting point than a generic chart. Our 2% range covers the concentration the EU ceiling permits, and 0% products are available for those reducing intake entirely.

Signs the strength or the device is wrong

  • Harsh throat hit, coughing, dizziness shortly after vaping: too much nicotine too quickly. See too much nicotine symptoms.
  • Constant puffing, never satisfied: either the strength is too low for your device's output or the draw is too short. See the strength guide.
  • Headaches or restlessness in the evening: total intake across the day, not per-puff strength, is usually the cause. See nicotine and headaches.
  • Poor sleep: covered in vaping and sleep.

Switching between device types

If you move from disposables to a refillable pod, your first week will feel different even at the same concentration. Two adjustments make the transition smoother:

  1. Keep the strength the same at first. Change one variable at a time, so you can tell what caused any change in feel.
  2. Shorten your draws initially. A higher-output device delivers more per puff, so the first days are about recalibrating duration rather than strength.

Practical tips for the first week are in switching from smoking to vaping. If you want to taper, do it slowly — the timeline in nicotine withdrawal explains why abrupt stops tend to rebound.

Frequently asked questions

Is 2% on a disposable the same as 2% in a pod?

The liquid concentration is identical, but the delivered dose per puff often is not, because a pod at higher power vaporises more liquid.

Can I buy stronger than 20 mg/ml in the EU?

No. 20 mg/ml is the TPD ceiling for e-cigarette liquids across the EU.

Why does a disposable feel weaker than a pod at the same strength?

Because disposables run at fixed, low power with a tight draw, so each puff vaporises less liquid.

Should I go up in strength if I am not satisfied?

At 20 mg/ml you are already at the ceiling. Adjust the device — airflow, draw length, coil — rather than the strength.

Does a longer draw mean more nicotine?

Yes. At a fixed concentration and power, dose scales roughly with the amount of liquid vaporised, which increases with draw length.
