"2 %", "3 %", "5 %" — the numbers on a disposable vape look simple, but they hide the fact that the same percentage can feel completely different from one device to the next. This guide explains what the percentage means, what each level feels like, and how to move down without falling back.
What the percentage actually means
The percentage is the concentration of nicotine in the e-liquid, expressed as weight per volume. The conversion to the unit used on e-liquid bottles is simple:
| Label | Concentration | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 0 % | 0 mg/ml | Nicotine-free; flavour only |
| 2 % | 20 mg/ml | Regular vapers and step-down |
| 3 % | 30 mg/ml | Heavier habits, stronger throat hit |
| 5 % | 50 mg/ml | Very heavy nicotine tolerance |
Different countries cap this at different levels. Some markets allow no more than 20 mg/ml, others permit higher concentrations. Always check your local limit before ordering — the fact that a device is listed on our site does not mean it is legal to import where you live.
How the strength feels
Two effects scale with nicotine: the throat hit (the scratch at the back of the throat) and the speed of satisfaction. Opposite effects matter too — higher nicotine is harsher and less forgiving of a sweet flavour profile.
- 0 % — smooth, flavour-forward, no throat scratch. Feels like inhaling flavoured air with vapour.
- 2 % — a clear but not aggressive throat hit. Most people who vape daily settle here.
- 3 % — noticeably firmer. Better with tobacco, menthol and coffee profiles than with fruit.
- 5 % — strong and peppery, with a fast hit. Sweet flavours can taste masked at this level.
Which one should you start with?
Match to your previous nicotine intake, not to how big the device is:
- Never used nicotine, or stepping down from 2 %: start at 0 %.
- Occasional smoker, or light vaper: 2 %.
- Around half a pack a day: 2 % is usually enough; try 3 % if the craving is not met.
- Pack-a-day or more, or a long-standing heavy vaper: 3–5 %.
If in doubt, choose the lower option. You can always take a longer draw; you cannot un-inhale a harsh one.
How to step down without going back
- Change one variable at a time. Move from 5 % to 3 %, keep the same flavour and device, and hold for two to three weeks.
- Increase flavour intensity as strength drops. Lower nicotine makes flavourings read more clearly — this is the reward, so use it.
- Do not compensate by vaping more at higher power. Boost modes increase liquid consumption, which quietly raises your nicotine intake back up.
- Keep a higher-strength device for hard moments. Having a 5 % bar in a drawer for a stressful day is more reliable than white-knuckling through it.
- Expect a wobble around day three to five after each step down. It passes.
Frequently asked questions
Is 5 % a lot of nicotine?
Yes — 50 mg/ml is a high concentration. It is intended for people with a substantial nicotine tolerance, and it is above the cap in several European markets. If you are not sure you need it, you do not.
Does higher nicotine make the vape last longer?
The device lasts exactly as long — the liquid volume is unchanged. What changes is how many puffs you feel you need, which in practice can stretch a device.
Can I mix strengths in one device?
Not on a disposable — the liquid is sealed in. If you want to fine-tune, use a refillable pod system where you control the liquid.
Why does the same percentage feel different on two devices?
Because airflow, coil resistance and power output change how much vapour (and therefore nicotine) you inhale per puff. A wide-airflow 5 % device can deliver more nicotine per draw than a tight 5 % one.
